SCTC Athletics Info

History

SCTC Athletics began as a basketball intramural sports in 2008. Games were played in the gymnasium next to the Griffin Campus beginning at lunchtime. Teams were comprised of several students in diverse programs. Administrators, faculty, staff and students competed against and alongside one another every Monday and Wednesday. As fate would have it, more and more students became involved and the Technical College System of Georgia granted SGA leaders and other students permission to investigate intercollegiate basketball for men and women teams. In 2010, the SCTC Tigers and Lady Tigers became members of the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association and the National Junior College Athletic Association and was one of the six Technical College System of Georgia teams to compete in Region XVII. To date SCTC has provided education to approximately 156 student athletes in its sports program enrolled various programs of study.

Within this timeframe several SCTC Tigers and Lady Tigers have made the NJCAA All-American and All-Conference Teams of Region XVII, Athlete of the Week, and SCTC Head Men’s Basketball Coach has be voted Coach of the year twice. The SCTC Tigers and Lady Tigers have had several team members to be featured Region XVII Player of the Year, as well as Coach, Calvin Sinkfield nominated as Region XVII Men’s Coach of the Year in 2015 and 2018.

The Southern Crescent Technical College Tigers Men’s team were first time NJCAA 2014-15 Region XVII Champions, GCAA Division III Regular Season Champions, and District 5 Runner-Up and Sweet 16 finalist and have won region in 2017 and 2018.

In January of 2018, SCTC Athletic Program, Men and Women’s Basketball, began competing at the Division 1 level offering Book Scholarships to student athletes.

Sportsmanship

The National Junior College Athletic Association and the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Region XVII and Southern Crescent Technical College strive to promote the ideals of good sportsmanship of safety and fair play by student athletes, coaches and spectators.  We request your cooperation by supporting the officials and participant in a positive manner.  Negative comments, profanity, obscene or otherwise abusive comments or actions directed at officials, student athletes, coaches, and team representatives will not be tolerated and are grounds for removal from the premises.  SCTC thank you for your support and cooperation.

Community Outreach

The SCTC Tigers and Lady Tigers volunteer in the community to help the less fortunate by installing fire alarms and participating in basketball camps at the local recreation centers. They collaborate with the Special Services program to donate toiletry items to the Promise Place. The Tigers and Lady Tigers work with elementary and middle school students with the fundamentals of basketball and their reading. They also worked with the Student Government Association and the Student Veterans Association in project clean up around campus. They lead SCTC students during the Breast Cancer Stroll of Love during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Intercollegiate Athletics

Southern Crescent Technical College provides opportunities for its students to participate in intercollegiate athletics. The Southern Crescent Technical College Tigers compete in men’s basketball and women’s basketball as Division I members of the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA), which is Region XVII of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

In order to be eligible to participate in either of these sports, student athletes are required to meet all eligibility requirements of the NJCAA and must:

  • Maintain satisfactory progress within an approved college program or course as listed in the college catalog;
  • Be a student in good standing, enrolled in full-time status (12 or more credit hours) within 15 days from the beginning of the term;*
  • Maintain enrollment in 12 or more credit hours of college coursework as listed in the college catalog during each term of athletic participation; college course work as listed in the college catalog during each term of athletic participation;
  • Maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher for each term of athletic participation and 2.0 GPA or higher overall to remain eligible;
  • Pass a physical examination administered by a qualified health care professional licensed to administer physical examinations prior to tryouts;
  • Read, complete, sign, and agree to abide by all liability waivers, codes of conduct, and other forms required by Southern Crescent Technical College.

Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act (EADA) Survey

The Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act is designed to make prospective students aware of a school’s commitment to providing equitable athletic opportunities for its men and women students. Any co-educational institution of higher education that participates in a federal student aid program must prepare an EADA report by October 15. Institutions must also report data to the U.S. Department of Education via this online survey. This is a mandatory survey.

Data collected in this survey will be published by the Office of Postsecondary Education on the Equity in Athletics Data Analysis Cutting Tool website located at http://ope.ed.gov/athletics

Southern Crescent Technical College will provide a paper copy of the report upon request.
