Graduates were all smiles on Monday, November 30, 2020 as Southern Crescent Technical College students celebrated their graduation during two outdoor commencement ceremonies held on the Griffin Campus at the Education and Training Complex at Ellis Crossing.
As a sign of the times, these socially-distanced outdoor ceremonies were for graduates only with guests able to watch from their vehicles and able to join via live stream and FM radio. These ceremonies honored graduates from Fall 2019, Spring 2020, Summer 2020 and Fall 2020 semesters.
SCTC President Dr. Alvetta Thomas stated, “We were thrilled to finally be able to properly celebrate the accomplishments and achievements of our graduates. We know that this ceremony had been postponed and altered from the original plans, but we are grateful to be able to recognize this most-important milestone in our graduate’s educational and career journey.”
The speaker for the 10 am ceremony was Dr. Lily Henson, Chief Executive Officer at Piedmont Henry Hospital. Graduates from all Allied Health, Arts and Sciences, Business, and Computer Information Systems programs participated in this ceremony. The speaker for the 2 pm ceremony was Scott Pearson, President of Peterbilt of Atlanta, LLC. Graduates from all Industrial Technology, Film Technology, Public Safety, and Professional Services programs as well as Adult Education programs participated in this ceremony. Both as valued workforce and education partners, the commencement speakers delivered a heartfelt charge to graduates and congratulated them, challenging them to continue on their path of success. They offered them words of support as they continue to achieve success in both their personal and professional life.
This year, Southern Crescent Technical College awarded 2,301 diplomas, degrees, and technical certificates of credit to students with just over 200 graduates choosing to participate in Monday’s ceremonies. All students were recognized for their achievements with words of encouragement from SCTC President, Dr. Alvetta Thomas. “We are so proud of what our students have accomplished,” she stated. “We genuinely want our students to succeed, and we are confident that Southern Crescent Technical College has provided them with the skills and education they need to launch successful careers and build productive lives.”
The graduation ceremonies were certainly a time for celebration as students were rewarded for both their achievements and sacrifices in their pursuit of educational goals and dreams. The graduates have worked diligently for this great accomplishment and should be commended for their dedication to education.
